Both the 2022 Cadillac XT5 and 2022 Cadillac XT4 offer decent passenger space and good looks. Apart from the size, they have some significant differences. Let’s compare them.
2022 Cadillac XT5
2022 Cadillac XT5 Starting Price: $43,995 | Praise yours or View offers near you
Above average: Spacious cabin; choice of engines; optional four-wheel drive; modern design.
Under average: Floor cladding does not qualify for many extras; the base engine could be stronger.
Conformity: The 2022 Cadillac XT5 luxury crossover, with a size between compact and medium, offers comfort for five people and a choice of engines. The base engine is a bit weak and we recommend opting for a higher trim level.
2022 Cadillac XT4
Starting price: $35,795 | Praise yours or View offers near you
Above average: Spacious cabin; good standard features; sharp exterior design.
Under average: Choice of one engine; average trade-in value; engine noise; wind noise; ride quality.
Conformity: The 2022 Cadillac XT4, a luxury crossover on the border between subcompact and compact, offers plenty of space and a sleek appearance. The ride could use more refinement, and there is a lot of engine noise under hard acceleration.
XT5 versus XT4: compact comfort
Cadillac XT5
While not a true mid-size, the 2022 Cadillac XT5 has plenty of room for five passengers and their cargo. Not only does it offer comfortable, usable space, but the XT5 also has a sleek exterior, a modest grille and a high-quality interior. We also like the sliding rear seat that can be adjusted if needed for more legroom or more cargo space. With no one in the back, the cargo space is an impressive 63 cubic feet.
The base engine in the 2022 XT5 is a turbocharged four-cylinder, and while it’s adequate for getting around, we’d prefer it a little more powerful. We like the 3.6-litre V6, which in the Sport model also comes with standard four-wheel drive, a sportier suspension and stronger brakes. Base models have front-wheel drive, and both the Luxury and Premium Luxury versions can be specified with four-wheel drive for an additional $2,000.
Standard equipment is respectable, with keyless entry and ignition, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, leatherette upholstery, two-zone automatic climate control and a power tailgate. Infotainment comes from an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, satellite radio, four USB ports, Wi-Fi and a Bose audio system with 8 speakers.
Safety equipment comes from Cadillac’s Smart System suite, with forward collision warning, rear parking aid, a safety warning seat and a headway indicator.
We recommend switching to the Sport model for fun driving, or at least the Premium Luxury version, which can be equipped not only with the V6, but also with sport suspension, leather upholstery, a rear-view mirror, wireless charging of telephones, a sunroof and blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic warning.
Cadillac XT4
Like its big brother the XT5, the 2022 Cadillac XT4 is not easy to classify, with a size that falls between compact and subcompact. That means it’s small and manoeuvrable, yet has plenty of room for cargo and passengers.
Inside, the XT4 offers decent space for passengers, with good head and legroom and a useful load area for its size. There’s a little more plastic in there than expected from a luxury nameplate, and unfortunately the cab can get quite loud, not only because of the engine noise when accelerating, but also because of the road and wind noise. More bad news comes in ride quality, which can be jittery and bumpy over uneven pavement.
There is only one engine choice in the XT4, connected to the front wheels or, optionally, all four. The turbocharged four-cylinder makes good power, but the XT4 isn’t fast, with a more relaxed level of acceleration. A 9-speed automatic transmission helps it reduce fuel consumption respectable.
Standard features are decent and include power front seats, simulated leather upholstery, various driving modes and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Wi-Fi, satellite radio and two USB ports. Safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking system, rear parking assist, rear seat reminder and safety warning seat.

Which one is right for me?
There’s a lot to like about the 2022 Cadillac XT5, from its luxurious equipment to its spacious cabin and choice of engines. If you want a comfortable small to mid-sized luxury SUV with an optional V6, the XT5 is worth checking out.
While certainly less expensive than its big brother, the 2022 Cadillac XT4 isn’t the best choice in its segment. While the XT5 offers refinement and comfort befitting a luxury vehicle, the XT4 falls short in almost every way.
