Reliability is always a concern when purchasing a new SUV for your family. One thing that drives many buyers towards a particular model is the hope that it will last a long time with very few major problems. Automakers like Lexus and Toyota are known for producing reliable models that last. As a result, full-size SUVs such as the new Lexus LX are rated as highly reliable for the new model year. In a surprising twist, experts say the 2022 Cadillac Escalade is just as reliable.
How reliable is the new Lexus LX?
JD Power’s experts use the experience of many current and previous owners to determine reliability. In addition, the publication’s Quality and Reliability Score measures “the level of defects, failures and design flaws experienced by car owners.” Furthermore, the latest 2022 Lexus LX SUV received an 83 out of 100 for this category. That makes it one of the better-rated vehicles overall for reliability and easily one of the best full-size SUV models.
In addition, this score was good enough to place the Lexus very high on JDP’s list. It ranks second in the ranking for large premium SUV models, ahead of notable models such as the Infiniti QX80, BMW X7, Land Rover Range Rover and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. We think it finished second instead of first for a few key reasons. One is the driving experience, which fell short by only 77 out of 100. While average, it’s not enough to beat the top-of-the-line 2022 Cadillac Escalade.
The 2022 Cadillac Escalade is just as reliable
Compared to the new Lexus LX, the 2022 Cadillac Escalade is just as reliable. Based on JDP’s consumer rankings, both models received the same score for quality and reliability. With both 83 out of 100 possible points in this category, it mostly came down to other factors to decide which model was superior overall. For example, the driving experience with the Escalade is an advantage over the Lexus SUV. It beat the LX’s score by a total of eight points.
Cadillac’s full-size luxury SUV finished just one point ahead, claiming the title of JD Power’s best overall large premium SUV. A few things owners have told JDP that they like about the Escalade are the use of the voice assistant, ample storage space and the power of the engine. The latter is no surprise, as the base Escalade uses a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Plus, it’s standard across the lineup, but an optional diesel alternative is available.

While the Lexus is reliable, it can be more or less reliable than JDP’s results show. For the 2022 model year, the Lexus LX received a complete overhaul. With a redesign like this, there’s no telling how different the SUV will be from year to year. As the publication on its site states, use the reviews with caution, as the redesigned vehicle can be more or less reliable than its predecessor.
In short, it’s impressive that the 2022 Cadillac Escalade is just as reliable as the new Lexus LX. Although JD Power’s data is from previous model years, the Lexus LX is known as a reliable and durable model. An expensive luxury full-size SUV like the Escalade that lasts or is just as reliable is excellent for buyers of this popular model.
