Nine things to know about the Dodge Challenger

  • Prices for the 2022 Challenger start at $38,165 in Canada and $30,940 in the US.

  • The Challenger will cease production after the 2023 model year.

The current Dodge Challenger is a solemn car. Actually, it’s more of a bully with a sense of humor. Unlike its direct competitors, namely the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, the big land yacht coupe doesn’t take itself too seriously, but if it needs to remind others who’s boss (I went there), it can and will.

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of riding almost all versions of both the Challenger and Charger, with one exception: I’ve never had Demon’d. The fact is, I’m fine with this, as I discovered years ago that the 392 V8 paired with a Tremec 6-speed pistol-grip transmission is the best way to test the Challenger.

I recently returned a Scat Pack 392 Widebody with a few options, including the Hemi Orange pack over Pitch Black and the buttery-smooth and mean 8-speed autobox. All week I basked in the rumble of the V8, collecting my thumbs like badges of honor and happily looking over the acre bonnet in front of me as I drove around.

While the Challenger (and Charger) idea is far from dead, it’s clear they won’t be making them this way in the very near future. If I’m really lucky, I’ll try again next year, but that will really be the last time.

Here’s why I thought it would be somewhat amusing to discuss a few facts about the living legend that is the Dodge Challenger:

The Challenger name, as a model, was introduced in 1970

While the Challenger was a little late to the muscle car game, it left its mark, two actually, and pretty much everywhere it went. Although it was sold for five model years, the first generation Challenger never managed to match the sales of Mustang and Camaro, which is why they are so sought after.

The General Lee was no challenger

You already know this, but just to be clear, General Lee, Bo and Luke’s ride in the wildly popular Dukes of Hazard show was a 1969 Dodge Charger, not a Challenger. The Charger recently returned as a four-door sedan, while the Challenger has always been a two-door coupe.

The second generation Challenger was sold from 1978 to 1983

This happened under the watchful eye of Mitsubishi Motors, and Dodge’s desire to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, and to put it simply, the image of a tough muscle car that clashed with the rising costs of the 1970s. energy (fuel) expired.

Again, the Challenger (Plymouth Sapporo, Mitsubishi Galant) weren’t big hits, as were the successor Dodge Conquest and Mitsubishi Starion, all of which are extremely collectible these days.

The current generation, the 3rddates from 2008

In fact, the first modern Challenger concept was unveiled in late 2005, or just over two years before the production model broke through. The hype surrounding the return of a “real” Challenger caused Boomers to toss their blank checkbooks at Dodge and shout “TAKE MY MONEY!” shouted.

And Dodge did and still does now that the Challenger are 15 . enterse model year 2023.

There are over two dozen versions of the 3 . beenrd generation Challenger

Decorations alone (SXT, GT, SE, R/T, SRT, Scat Pack, Hellcat, Demon, etc.) account for more than half of this. There have been so many iterations that even aficionados will probably have a hard time remembering them all.

Only 300 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost will be made

In all fairness, I’ve listed three times now the many variations, including Widebody versions, T/A and Shaker packs, and sub-iterations of embellishments like the Scat Pack 1320, and I actually have no idea how many there really are. It could even be more than three dozen if we take the ‘Last Call’ into account. Oh, and the convertible too.

Dodge Releases a Special Edition Series of Chargers and Challengers as Part of the Last Call Program

The third and most successful Challenger generation is not going to leave the house quietly. In true Dodge style and in keeping with the brand’s image, the automaker is currently releasing seven special and final editions of the Challenger and Charger.

Dodge Launches Charger and Challenger Scat Pack Swinger as Part of Last Call

The ‘Last Call’ campaign so far has introduced the 2023 Dodge Challenger Shakedown, the Charger Super Bee, both the Challenger and Charger Scat Pack Swinger, the Charger King Daytona and the Challenger Black Ghost. The final and seventh installments will be revealed at the 2022 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, scheduled for November 1-4, 2022.

Fact: 392 > Hellcat

Power is not everything. With 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque on tap, the naturally aspirated 6.4L V8 already has far more power than the massive Pirelli rear tires could ever properly handle. That power is delivered effortlessly, nestled in is a soothing and massaging rumble that elicits grins.

Rightly so, in a straight line, the 700+ horsepower Hellcat will crush the 392, but it really defines “too much isn’t always a good thing.”

My dream Challenger is a:

Not that you care, but I would specify my (and my wife is thinking of you) new dream Challenger like this:

Scat Pack 392 widebody with 6-speed Tremec manual transmission, F8 green or Hellraisin painted, the Plus Group, and most importantly, the Shaker Package – once you have Shaker, all other hoods are meh.

The next Challenger, should it return, will be all-electric

Dodge has made it clear that it will turn a new page and replace displacement and forced induction with electric motors. However, Dodge will not relinquish its king of muscle title in the future. In any case, their goals for the future are clear: they intend to go beyond Hellcat’s achievements.
