RECALL: Ram is recalling certain trucks because rear camera is not showing!

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain model year 2022 Ram 1500 (DT), Ram 2500 (DJ), and Ram 3500 10K LB. Vehicles with chassis cab (DF). for radio software that may prevent the rear view image from being displayed. This will result in non-compliance with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility”.

The driver of the vehicle will notice that the image from the rearview mirror is not displayed if he tries to refer to the image while reversing. Failure to heed this warning could result in an increased risk of injury to people outside the vehicle when reversing without checking that it is safe to do so.

According to the recall, 117,759 units were affected.

  • 2022 Ram 1500 (DT) – (80,245 units) – The suspicious period began on Friday, June 18, 2021, when the first 2022 model year vehicle was produced, and ended on Friday, June 3, 2022, when the assembly plant no longer produced non-compliant vehicles.
  • 2022 Ram 2500 (DJ) – (37,441 units) – The suspicious period began on Saturday, August 7, 2021, when the first 2022MY vehicle was produced, and ended on Friday, June 3, 2022, when the assembly plant no longer accepts non-compliant vehicles.
  • 2022 Ram 3500 10K LB. Chassis Cab (DF) – (73 units) – The suspicious period began on Saturday, August 21, 2021, when the first 2022MY vehicle was produced, and ended on Friday, May 28, 2022, when the assembly plant no longer shipped non-compliant vehicles.

Recall the chronology:

  • On November 5, 2021, at an FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) assembly plant, it was discovered that while reversing a truck, the rearview image on the radio screen appeared blue with the text that the camera system is unavailable.
  • In an effort to conduct supplier testing on vehicles from November 2021 through January 2022
    duplicate the problem. The problem could not be duplicated until test benches confirmed the problem in January
    19 2022.
  • On January 26, 2022, the FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization opened a safety investigation based on technical testing for a possible non-compliance with FMVSS No. 111.
    Visibility.
  • In February 2022, FCA US Engineering conducted comparative testing on Ram 2500 vehicles against the
    same camera and radio and could not duplicate the problem.
  • From February 2022 through April 2022, FCA US TSRC reviewed vehicle data and met with FCA US
    engineering to assess the problem and understand the part design and change history.
  • On May 11, 2022, FCA US TSRC acknowledged that the rear view camera may fail internally, resulting in the
    rear view camera image is not displayed during a backing event, may not comply with FMVSS No.
    111.
  • On June 2, 2022, FCA US, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, decided to issue a voluntary
    safety recall of the affected vehicles.

Engineering changes and vehicle production records were used to determine the suspect period. Vehicles not included in this recall are not equipped with the incompatible rearview camera and radio combination or were built after the suspected period. The recall only applies to the above vehicles equipped with an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 radio (sale code UBD) and ParkView rear view camera (sale code XAC).
