Why the 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel is now a compact Power Wagon

Ram Trucks has decided to expand its portfolio by unveiling the 2023 Ram Heavy Duty Rebel. Aside from the usual 6.4-litre HEMI V8 engine, it will now be available with an inline-six 6.7-litre Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. The new Ram 2500 Rebel sits directly below the mighty Ram 2500 Power Wagon and just above the 2500 Laramie trim. Like the Power Wagon, the 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel will be available in the four-wheel drive version. But, unlike the Power Wagon, the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel doesn’t get the front locker. This is Ram’s second Rebel variant after the light 1500 Rebel was introduced in 2016.

A new engine to choose from

The current lineup of Ram 2500 trucks uses a massive 6.4-liter V8 engine that delivers 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of power and torque. The same HEMI V8 is in the 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel, but the vehicle also gets an optional inline-six 6.7-liter turbo diesel that delivers 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft. This is the same engine that produces 420 hp and 1,075 Nm when installed in the Ram 3500. The power in the 2023 Ram Heavy Duty Rebel may be slightly less than the V8, but the torque delivered by the diesel engine is almost twice as big as the petrol V8. The turbo diesel version gets a six-speed automatic transmission and the spicier V8 is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. With the transfer case, you can choose whether you want those power figures on all four wheels or just the rear two.

How rebellious is the new 2500 Rebel?

Whichever bike you choose, the 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel offers a pack that’s ready to go to battle the moment it leaves the dealership. The rear slip differential, electronic trunk, 20-inch wheels with 33-inch off-road tires, fuel tank and transfer case skid plates, and an optional 12,000-lb. winch installed from the factory leave practically no room for anything aftermarket. However, the winch is only available with the V8 version because the diesel engine air cooler hangs low and doesn’t work well with the winch setup. The new Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel has a maximum towing capacity of 16,870 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 3,140 pounds. A 360-degree camera helps you navigate better as you venture into the wild. It also comes with a digital rear view mirror with tow mode. This setup is complemented by a single screen display to show both sides of the 2500 Rebel to help drivers maneuver those drag movements.

How comfortable will the 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel be?

The Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel is available in a double cab configuration with a 6 foot 4 inch box. The double-cab arrangement gives extra legroom to the rear seat passengers without compromising comfort, unlike the four-cab arrangement. This means the luxury of an SUV interior with the functionality and practicality of a pickup bed. It results in a relatively smaller bed size, but that’s not much of a deterrent when choosing comfort over more payload. You can choose from three different seating options to suit your taste and needs. It has Ram’s five-link coil spring setup, with an optional rear air suspension.

In the interior, you can choose between a 12-inch frameless digital meter cluster or a 12-inch vertical touchscreen. The comfortable ride is made safer with the help of technologies such as adaptive cruise control, full speed collision warning, lane assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection, automatic headlamps, digital rear view mirror with tow mode and rain sensor wipers.

Reinforcing its presence in the pickup segment

Already a force to be reckoned with in the pickup truck segment, Ram has bolstered its presence with the announcement of the 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel. The new model is expected to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2022 with a suggested retail price starting at $67,045, with an additional destination fee of $1,895. This is more than the price of the current 2022 Ram 2500 Power Wagon. This price increase is quite justified considering what the 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel has to offer. The Rebel badge’s aggressive stance and styling makes it worth the penny.

Commenting on the 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel, Mike Koval Jr., CEO of the Ram – Stellantis brand, said: “Ram Heavy Duty Rebel buyers will love the fact that the latest addition to our versatile lineup features a combination of offers off-road performance without sacrificing power. Ram has a deep, rich and strong history of the most capable off-road trucks, and the new 2023 Ram Heavy Duty Rebel contributes to that history while delivering the segment benchmarks in comfort, luxury materials, innovation and technology.”
